Gordon Murray’s design company wants to build a lightweight supercar using the revolutionary chassis and body construction methods behind its radical T25 city car.  Murray, whose design credits include the McLaren F1, says that he wants his next supercar to be compact, lightweight and powered by a high-output, small-capacity engine, combining strong performance with low CO2 emissions.

With the relationship that produced the SLR Supercar ended, Mercedes-Benz and U.K.-based McLaren have gone their separate ways. But like a bitterly divorced couple, the partners-turned-competitors are said to be developing quite the rivalry. Although Daimler AG owns a large stake in McLaren, Mercedes-Benz is reportedly refusing to supply the British Supercar maker with engines for its successor to the McLaren F1.

Mercedes-Benz is interested in buying the remainder of McLaren, team chief executive Martin Whitmarsh has admitted at Hockenheim. On the verge of the German manufacturer’s home race, Whitmarsh confirmed the constant speculation about McLaren’s long-time partner wanting to up its share from the current 40%. McLaren teamed up with the Stuttgart manufacturer in 1995, and Mercedes-Benz is now the only carmaker on the grid that does not own its team outright.
