Volkswagen will launch a new high-performance VW Golf GTI soon after its standard flagship hatchback, company sources have revealed.  It should arrive in showrooms in spring 2009, but we may get a sneak preview of the new GTI as soon as October, when a concept is tipped to be unveiled.

Volkswagen has resurrected plans for an affordable, mid-engine coupe and roadster tandem as part of an image-building campaign aimed at highlighting the company’s design and engineering prowess.  VW chairman Martin Winterkorn is planning to unveil a concept version of the lightweight two-seater at the Los Angeles show in November. If public opinion is positive, the new car could be in showrooms by 2011. It’s been styled under Walter de’ Silva and borrows from VW’s vast parts bin to keep development costs low.

Volkswagen is reportedly working on an affordable mid-engine sports car along the lines of the Lotus Elise and Toyota MR2, which it plans to release sometime early next decade. The car is expected to be available in both coupe and roadster body styles, and production could even be outsourced to an independent vehicle manufacturer such as Karmaan. The information comes from the boss of VW, Martin Winterkorn, who also confirmed that a concept version of the roadster will be showcased at this November’s Los Angeles Auto Show.

The covers have finally come of Volkswagen’s sixth-generation Golf hatch thanks to an early leak of images on several Internet forums. Expected to make its official debut later this month before going on display for the first time at October’s Paris Motor Show, the new Golf looks incredibly like the current Mark V but differs thanks to its Scirocco-style headlights and Touareg tail lamps.

After loosing the number 2 spot in worldwide sales to Toyota back in 2003, Ford is on its way to lose the third place to the VW Group. During the first half of 2008, Volkswagen managed to slip into the third spot right behind Toyota and GM , leaving Ford in fourth place. The German Group reported sales of 3.27 million vehicles during the first half of the year, a 5.8 percent increase over 2007. Ford on the other hand saw its sales fall 11 percent during the same period to 3.09 million vehicles.  VW is Great, we drive VWs…

VW Group tuning specialist ABT has launched the first wave of products for the new Volkswagen Passat CC. Though ABT’s visual package is still pending, the Kempten based tuner offers power upgrades for both the 1.8 TSI (from 160 to 200 Hp) and 2.0 TSI (from 200 to 240 Hp) petrol engines. In the forthcoming weeks, ABT will also offer a power kit for the 2.0 TDI diesel engines, upgrading the 140 Hp version to 170 Hp and the 170 Hp version to 190 Hp. Buyers can also add a sport suspension kit along with new 18 or 20-inch alloy wheels in two different designs.
