The new 2009 Acura RL sedan has won the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) Top Safety Pick award in the Institute latest round of testing. To qualify, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of ‘good’ in the institute front, side, and rear tests and be fitted with electronic stability control. The new RL improved significantly compared to the previous model, with the side impact test result going from acceptable to good and the rear test result improving from poor to good. The RL is also the fourth Acura and ninth model from Honda to earn the coveted safety rating.

Electric cars from Mitsubishi are getting a test run in the United States. The automaker has signed a deal with two California utility companies to begin testing the i MiEV, an electric car based on the “i” mini cars Mitsubishi sells in Japan. Tests will start late this year.

Not widely recognized as a performance parts leader, but rapidly becoming one, TRD (Toyota Racing Development) has revealed a supercharger system for its Tundra and Sequoia pickup and SUV. Featuring the same basic Eaton four-lobe system found in the Cadillac CTS-V and Corvette ZR-1, the new supercharger boosts the company’s 5.7L V8 to 504hp (376kW) and 550lb-ft of torque (742Nm) maximum output.
