The man at the head of Mazda’s design studios in Irvine, CA, Franz von Holzhausen, has left the company to lead Tesla’s design unit. His first two challenges will include the ‘Model S’ sedan and an affordable sport compact EV, but after more than three years as the lead designer for Mazda’s highly regarded concept and production vehicles, he’s reportedly looking forward to the greater flexibility the smaller company will offer.

A report from British magazine Autocar citing company insiders in Japan supports that the all-new Mazda3 will make its world premiere in sedan form at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November, while the five-door hatchback 3 will be launched at the Bologna Show in Italy in December. This means the Mazda’s new sporty compact car should arrive in European and Japanese dealerships in the first quarter of 2009, with the U.S. and other international markets following shortly after.

Over a million times we’ve heard rumors about a successor to the iconic Mazda RX-7. And here we are once again with a new set of -virtually identical- renderings scanned from two different Japanese car magazines that state Mazda will reveal a fourth generation RX-7 Coupe in 2010. While the mags may have their sources, officially, Mazda has never said anything about a new RX-7. The only thing that Mazda has announced is that it will reveal a significantly revised version of its rotary engine with more power and improved economy in the early 2010s. Now, if that engine will be used on a new model like the RX-7 is something to be seen.
